Flute Day - Ian Clarke

20th November 2011, Winchester Cathedral

Ian Clarke is acknowledged as one of the leading player/composers in the flute world. His compositions have been performed across five continents on stages ranging from London’s South Bank to the Glastonbury Rock Festival and have been featured in the last four BBC Young Musician Woodwind finals. These published works are establishing themselves as some of the most exciting flute repertoire of today and are being embraced by internationally acclaimed performers, teachers, colleges & students alike.

On 20th November Ian will be visiting Winchester Cathedral to run a fantastic day of flute playing, including sessions on extended techniques and big flute group playing. The day promises to be very helpful and inspiring for flautists of all standards and will cost £25. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome.

The finale at the end of the day will be when all the workshop participants will perform a couple of pieces they have learnt. This will take place at 5pm and all friends and family are invited. Flautissimo, the Southampton Flute Orchestra will also play a short programme and Ian will be accompanied by Tim Carey performing some of his own compositions. Tickets are £3 - this is a concert not to be missed!

Jonathan Myall Woodwind are supporting and will be visiting with an array of instruments, sheet music and accessories to try out, as well as music (including Ian’s compositions which are on the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall syllabuses) for you to browse. The shop will be open from 11am - 4pm and is an ideal place to buy some musical Christmas presents.

For more advanced players you can have an accompanist session with Tim Carey in which you can go through repertoire and discuss aspects of performing with one of the flute world’s best accompanists. There will be a £5 charge and students will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Tim will happily play through items for two or three flutes and piano as well.
