Wind band workshops for players of grade 3 and above for all ages. Come and be part of an exciting workshop playing brand new music written for wind band! If you play a wind, brass or percussion instrument then you are welcome to come along and join in.

This is a great opportunity to explore emerging wind band repertoire, as well as make new friends and learn from one of the UK’s leading composers and educators.

Andy Scott is a saxophonist, composer and educator with a lifelong passion for music and over 25 years experience of initiating creative projects. As a successful contemporary composer Andy’s distinctive compositional voice speaks with a unique and effective mix of jazz, world music and contemporary classical elements. Andy won a British Composer Award, has had works premiered at the Southbank Centre & Carnegie Hall NYC, his most recent world premiere was his Saxophone Concerto, performed by Branford Marsalis & the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He is composer in residence with Foden’s Band, whose recording of his works A World Within won the British Bandsman CD of the Year in 2010. Andy also writes much of the material for his own large jazz funk ensemble Sax Assault, which has recorded two CDs and featured on BBC Radio 3 Jazz Notes.

There will also be a Sax Assault workshop for saxophone players grade 4 and above with SaxAssault members. Andy Scott’s Sax Assault workshops are based on his original jazz funk compositions for saxophone ensemble and rhythm section. They provide experience in ensemble playing with optional opportunities for improvisation. These are equally suited to beginners and advanced improvisers, and have proved very popular with people of all ages and a wide range of playing ability. Workshop tickets are £5.

10am - 12pm: Junior Wind Band workshop with Andy Scott. For players grade 3 to 5 standard on the following instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophones, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, french horn, euphonium, trombone, percussion.
1pm - 3pm: Sax Assault session with Rob Buckland. For saxophone players grade 4 and above.
1pm - 3pm: Senior Wind Band workshop with Andy Scott. For players grade 6 and above on the following instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophones, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, french horn, euphonium, trombone, percussion.

The main event... SaxAssault perform live at Turner Sims! Saturday 3rd November, 7.30pm

After working hard and getting to know Andy don’t forget to come along and hear him play in his nine-piece saxophone funk band 'Sax Assault' at Turner Sims Southampton. This is a concert not to be missed! You will witness nine of the UK’s leading saxophonists come together with their outstanding rhythm section to perform a funky and sophisticated programme, before taking it to the London Jazz Festival later in the month.

This is an opportunity not to be missed! Come and hear the fantastic SaxAssault, a jazz funk saxophone group with rhythm section. Featuring nine saxophones from sopranino down to bass being played by the UK’s top saxophonists. Members of the band include Rob Buckland, Carl Raven, Simon Willescroft, Andy Scott, Dave Graham, Mike Hall, John Helliwell, Andy Morel, Jim Fieldhouse (saxophone), George King (piano), Ollie Collins (bass), and Elliot Henshaw (drums).

They will be playing a brand new set of music in preparation for their performance at the London Jazz Festival so why not come along and hear it here first.
