The Fun, Fast Track Way To Improve Your Clarinet Playing - Alex Allen

Alex initially was taught by his father. Later he studied as an Exhibitioner at the Royal College of Music with John McCaw, and with help from the Countess of Munster trust with Dame Thea King. He was second prize winner in the 1982 BBC Woodwind final of Young Musician of the Year. Whilst at the RCM he won several competitions including the B & H National Competition and played as a soloist with many orchestras including the Northern Sinfonia. He is the leader of the Thurston Clarinet Quartet who have recorded several CD's for ASV. He was Principal Clarinet for City of Birmingham Touring Opera & Carl Rosa Opera and through his long association with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group he has broadcast for Radio throughout Europe. In 2007 Alex was invited by the Associated Board to take part in recording the music for the new 2008-2013 clarinet syllabus, his CD's are sold at the back of the new exam booklets. Alex teaches at Surrey University and the Royal College of Music.

On 20 and 21 November Alex will be visiting Winchester Cathedral to run an exciting weekend entitled 'The Fun, Fast Track Way To Improve Your Clarinet Playing'. Each day will combine workshops, masterclasses, technique and clarinet ensemble sessions - so bring your clarinet! The weekend promises to be very helpful and inspiring for clarinettists of all standards and will cost £25 per day. Players between Grade 3 and Grade 5 standard are invited to come along on Saturday 20 November and players Grade 6 and above on Sunday 21 November.

On Saturday 20 November Alex will be performing at the Baptist Church, Swan Lane, Winchester with pianist Tim Carey. He will present a varied programme of clarinet repertoire and will be joined by the Southampton Clarinet Chorale. Tickets are £10, or £5 if bought in conjunction with a day ticket.

Jonathan Myall Woodwind are supporting the weekend and will be visiting with an array of instruments, sheet music and accessories to try out, as well as music for you to browse. The shop will be open from 11am - 4pm on both days.
