Meet Abbie Burrows and Gareth McLearnon: flute soloists, orchestral players and west-end musicians. Abbie is currently playing on the touring show of hit musical Wicked and Gareth is a prolific soloist, teacher and composer, as well as playing on numerous shows including Oliver!, Miss Saigon, Lord of the Rings and The Lion King. Abbie teaches at the Junior Royal Academy of Music and Gareth is Professor of Flute at the Yuri Bashmet Academy in Russia. Then meet their flutes, a selection of big and small, wooden and gold, even a bone one and one covered in Swarovski crystals.

A bit about Abbie and Gareth...

Abigail Burrows studied at the Purcell School and Royal College of Music. She leads a varied freelance career working as a soloist, orchestral player, workshop leader and teacher. She is currently the flute player on the UK tour of hit musical Wicked. As a soloist, she has appeared at most major London venues and has performed extensively throughout Europe, Africa and the U.S. A passionate teacher, Abbie is currently teaching the flute at the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department and runs an international outreach Fife Project and has worked with over 500 children. Abbie currently plays a 9k Gold Brannen-Cooper Flute awarded by the Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust.

Northern Irish flute player Gareth McLearnon enjoys a delightfully diverse career. As a performer, he is in demand as a soloist, recording artist, orchestral and chamber musician. He has given World Premiere performances of two concertos and appeared as a soloist with orchestras in the UK, Europe, Russia and China, and performed solo recitals all over the world. In June 2013 Gareth was appointed Professor of Flute for the Yuri Bashmet International Music Academy in Russia, giving a week of masterclasses and concerts including as flute soloist with the Moscow Soloists conducted by Maestro Bashmet himself. Gareth returned to Russia in October 2013 & 2014, giving two nine-day masterclass tours of Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Zhoukovsky, Tolyatti and Kazan. Gareth has been principal flute of the Heritage Orchestra since 2009; highlights include performing with Antony & the Johnsons in London and Paris, BBC Proms TV & Radio broadcast with Jamie Cullum, and a UK arena tour and CD/DVD record with Tim Minchin. A prolific composer and arranger - Gareth's album Round Ireland with a Flute is published by Theodore Presser, his arrangements feature extensively in the Trinity exam syllabus, and his original works for flute ensemble have been performed on four continents. Gareth is a Haynes Artist.
