Saxophone Day - Nigel Wood

1st April 2017, Learning Centre, Winchester Cathedral

Saxophone players grade 5 and above are invited to attend and enjoy playing a collection of saxophone ensemble music directed by Nigel Wood.

Nigel studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire where he specialised in saxophone and clarinet performance. He was one of the first students to study the saxophone at the Conservatoire and after graduation, became a saxophone teacher at the Conservatoire and helped to establish their exam syllabus for that instrument.

As a founder member of the group Saxtet, Nigel was inspired to compose, arrange and later publish new music for the saxophone. This resulted in the birth of the music publishing company, Saxtet Publications which still publishes most of his music.

Some of his compositions have been performed in the UK and abroad by such notable saxophonists as Gerard McChrystal, John Harle and Arno Bornkamp. Nigel's works have also been broadcast on both radio and television. He was the founder and musical director of the National Saxophone Choir of GB and is the leading exponent of the Soprillo, the world's smallest saxophone.

The music played in the workshop will include some of Nigel's compositions and arrangements for saxophone choir, from the Saxtet Publications catalogue and National Saxophone Choir repertoire.

Participants will also have the opportunity to blow the rarer saxes, bass, sopranino and soprillo. The focus will be on improving ensemble skills and preparation for performance. Sheet music will be sent out in advance.
