Saxophone Workshop - Chris Gumbley

24th January 2016, The Learning Centre, Winchester Cathedral

A day of ensemble playing and jazz for the straight player led by Chris Gumbley - composer, saxophonist and ABRSM examiner.

Chris studied clarinet, piano and composition at Huddersfield School of Music (1976-79) and has since pursued a freelance career encompassing playing, composing, examining, teaching, tutoring and promoting. He is now based in Stafford (UK).

Equally at home in both jazz and classical contexts, past work has included tours with The Temptations, Four Tops, Saxtet, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group Pasadena Roof Orchestra, The Charleston Chasers and Sticky Wicket, as well as countless shows and jazz gigs.

He hosted his own radio show, Jazzbeat, on BBC Radio Stoke, up until recently.

He also runs a jazz club, Gumbles, in Stafford, his home town, which attracts leading players from Britain and overseas.

Lately, Chris has earned national recognition for his educational music for woodwind, which appears on all the major national exam syllabuses. His own publishing company, Gumbles Publications, was launched in 2010.

Current playing projects include Tribute to Cannonball Adderley, a great line-up featuring trumpeter Neil Yates, and son Dan Nicholls on piano, and Fascinating Rhythm, a jazz quartet with vocalist Sara Colman, Ben Markland and Al Gurr.

Recent classical concerts with members of the CBSO have featured the Brahms and Mozart Clarinet Quintets.

Chris now travels the world as an ABRSM examiner.
