Flautissimo 25 Anniversary Reunion - November 2009

When I embarked on the idea of a 25th Anniversary celebration for Flautissimo I had no idea how many past members and conductors would come. The reality was incredible. The committee and I had been busy planning the event for nearly a year and when 14th November finally arrived we were all excited and a little nervous. Would we have enough food? Was there enough time to do all the recording? Would the past members recognise each other?! The day began nice and early with the current Flautissimo in Chris Taylor’s studio to record five pieces. Throughout the morning the past members came together to practice their pieces and catch up. Lunch was a busy time with the exchange of stories and memories, as well as email addresses to stay in touch. In the afternoon we recorded all seventy-plus players (complete with double bass and percussion) performing music from the Flautissimo archives, including ‘Blue Train’ by Ryohei Hirose and ‘Tanti Anni Prima’ by Piazolla arranged by Rene Mairis, a former MD, with Robin Soldan (Flautissimo founder) playing a beautiful solo. We then moved to St Augustus Church for the evening concert. This was a fantastic concert, with a solo performance by Gary Woolf who has gone on to do great things with flute tuition and performance in Germany. It was really lovely to have all the past MD’s there together, as well as so many past members sharing their love of playing together again. Here’s to the 30th!
